This guide is supposed to be a guide to help you take good pictures for Arboairs services. It is possible that other camera settings can create an even better result but this guide can help you along the way.
Winter images
In the winter we have different scenarios and this guide covers some.
Snow cover
To begin with: if there is snow on the trees or frost on the trees Arboairs services will not work. Below in image 1 and 2 are two examples of images that need to be avoided.
Image 1. Can be fixed with settings | Image 2. Cannot be fixed with settings |
Image 3. Good image with snow cover. | Image 4. Okey image with snow cover. |
Camera settings to improve image 1.
In image 1 the exposure has been automatically set on the white pixels, which makes the trees dark. What we can do to improve the image exposure is to compensate for the exposure by changing the EV.
The value of the EV depends on how much snow there is, what time of the day it is, and if it is cloudy or sunny.
If most of the picture is white use a higher interval of EV compensation, e.g. if the trees are standing sparsely or if the landscape is broken up.
If most of the picture is darker, e.g. if the trees are standing closer or the picture is mainly forest, use a lower interval of EV compensation.
Below are listed a few examples of how EV is affecting image exposure. These images are taken during lunchtime on a cloudy day in the winter with snow cover on the ground.
Image 5 - Best EV: +1 This is the kind of image we are trying to achieve. |
|
Image 6 - Good EV: +1.3 |
|
Image 7 - Ok EV: +0.7 |
|
Image 8 - Bad EV: +0.3 |
|
Image 9 - Terrible EV: 0 |
Risks with image 4
In image 4 there are some leaf trees. These trees have more white pixels and when we use a higher EV compensation white pixels will be even more white with the risk of overexposing the leaf trees. Therefore we need a lower EV compensation when flying over leaf trees to make them less white.
No snow cover
If there is no snow cover we can still adapt the EV compensation to get correct exposed images. Below are some examples of different EV compensation when there is no snow and how the EV compensation affects the image exposure.
Even though no EV compensation can be the best alternative in some scenarios, an addition of exposure or a decrease of exposure might be better in other scenarios. Therefore you have to be aware of the environmental aspects of the flight and adapt the EV compensation to get the best image exposure. As in images 3, 4, 5 and 10 (middle one).
App guides for adapting the exposure
Dronelink
DJI GS Pro
DroneDeploy
Not possible. Can be changed in the DJI Go 4/DJI Fly. This requires an app change mid-flight. The DJI Go 4/DJI Fly app looks like DJI GS Pro.
Pix4D
Not possible.
